Agatha Christie – the renowned Queen of Crime is the reason why I began gravitating towards the crime, mystery, and suspense genre. It might have been a casual impulse that made me pick my first Christie; I do not even remember what my first Christie novel was all these years later. But thank God for that singular impulse; I am a devourer of her works today.
Poirot with his Captain Hastings, Miss Marple and her quiet village scandals, the daring Tommy and Tuppence and even the standalone whodunits, every story casts a net of intrigue that makes me automatically burn the midnight oil, scurry over the pages and rush towards the climax. The curiosity only lets me sleep once I find out who did it, why and how they did it.
That is the sheer power of Christie’s writing!
During one of my routine social media scans, I came across the official Agatha Christie handle (@officialagathachristie) managed by the team at Agatha Christie Limited and their wonderful initiative, “Read Christie 2024”.
“To explore her work through the decades, the reading challenge shall take a deeper dive into the world at that time, potential sources of inspiration, and other authors of influence starting from the 1920s and working towards her final stories published in the 1970s.”
Their premise is exciting, and the opportunity is too excellent to miss. Thus, here I am, eager to begin from the very beginning and re-discover the charm of the Queen of Crime.
Starting this January 2024, I shall pick up my favourite titles (and some new stories, too!) from the 1920s and headlong into the challenge.
Come and join me in this adventure
